Orphans and orphanages.

There's an underground copper mine in Butte, Montana, USA, that was so dangerous to work in, had claimed the lives of so many miners, that the miners renamed the mine, "The Orphan Girl."
This shows, in certain places and times of history, losing one or more parents to accident or other cause was almost commonplace. Though nothing can take the place of a lost loved one, the variety of responses of the survivors can and usually does make the difference of how they are able to carry on with their lives.
